One BadAssGamer Believes Killzone 2 is Being Unfairly Reviewed

by Goldanas on Feb.06, 2009, under Opinions, PS3

Rad Box ArtIt’s inevitable, I suppose. The internet is bound to be churlish and self-defeating when it comes to childish matters. This current issue appears to revolve around the reviews for Killzone 2. So far, it’s been getting some pretty good scores. Based on what? Who knows? They’re good scores on a scale of 1 to 10 anyway. Even though they’re good scores, it didn’t take long for idiots to come out and say these scores were incredibly shitty or they were so fantastic you would shit yourself or these irrelevant scores are better than these other irrelevant scores and so on and so forth.

Let me reiterate: It doesn’t matter. Play the game to see how it scores on your own personal pointless scale; that’s the only way to really know.

One gamer, of the “BadAss” variety, claims that he has played it(although he doesn’t really indicate any proof, but there’s so much review code out there, it’s hard not to just assume), and, apparently, he thinks it’s bigger than Jesus. Unfortunately, his opinion doesn’t gel with IGN’s, so he’s seen fit to refute theirs.

. . . it seems like some reviewers believe it is their job to review a product based on what it doesn’t have, now I have never quite understood this logic, killzone 2 is getting scored down for lacking a co-op mode, sure that would have been a great addition, but the fact is it isn’t part of the game, therefore reviewers should not take points away for the lack of the feature, to further my point take a look at the reviews of Call of Duty 4, a great shooter in many ways, with an addicting multiplayer mode, the game did not have co-op, I repeat it did not have a co-op feature, yet it was barely mentioned in reviews, and even in reviews were it was brought up, points were usually not deducted.  This is not the same with Killzone 2. If this applies to Killzone 2 then every shooter hence forth had better include a co-op mode, or we should expect the same to happen.

Video Games Need More Nudity

by Goldanas on Feb.03, 2009, under Opinions, Rant

Inspired by a conversation had in the delicious new podcast, I came to ponder the nudity in video games thus far. It could have been a good time.tasteful?

Aside from what’s in a tremendous amount of fan art, there really isn’t a whole lot that’s palatable in this day and age. Sure, we had the opportunity to see some pixel-sized nipple back in the day with Custer’s Revenge, but I would hardly say that’s in accordance with good taste. In fact, there’s hardly a game out there that treats nudity tastefully. (continue reading…)

AaaaaAAaaaAAAaaAAAAaAAAAA!!!

by Goldanas on Jan.31, 2009, under Developers, Opinions, PC, Steam Sale

That’s the title. I’m serious. The name of the game is AaaaaAAaaaAAAaaAAAAaAAAAA!!! – A Reckless Disregard for Gravity or Aaaaa! for short as the developers have indicated.

It’s a base-jumping game from Dejobaan Games, developers of The Wonderful End of the World. If you’ve never heard of that game, do yourself a favor and head over to Steam and pick it up. It’s a stupid cheap knockoff of Katamari Damacy that’s far easier to control and retains it’s own sense of quirky humor that may or may not be expected from an indie developer such as this. Graphically, it’s not comparable, but it’s still fun if you’re looking for that kind of kick.

So, now that you’ve done that (and you have done that), we can take a look at Aaaaa!

What You Can Do for the GEB Podcast!

by Goldanas on Jan.29, 2009, under Site Stuff

Hello womens and bros, we’re just about ready to have another podcast hosted by myself, Goldanas. It’s called MASSIVE DAMAGE or Crabcast or something to that extent, just so long as it doesn’t have anything to do with blags. So that makes this the first GEB podcast, but it’s really the second, and oh, man, never mind. I’m here to tell you what you can contribute!

First off:

You can be in it!

twtd-aok

Head here to find out how.

If you’re not feeling that, or even if you are, you can also throw out a question or discussion topic that we’ll then open up during the podcast. That’s right! User response and feedback!

It can be about anything. If you want to throw out a discussion on market trends and current economic downturns, right on! If you want to find out what we think would fix the Sonic series, ask away! If you want to know Alex’s playing habits on TF2, divulge! If you want to find out why I’m such a big homosexual for writing that Tingle fiction, go ahead, cowboy!

tingle_by_mahiruno

You can throw out whatever you want and we’ll respond to it providing it’s not too personal, but that’ll depend on the user.

To have your question or topic read during the podcast, post it in the comments under this post using your username. The list of who’s going to be in it is as-of-yet undetermined, but you can count on Alex, mulmeltia, and myself. Don’t let that discourage you from asking about other users and their series or articles, though. Ask away.

Feel free to post huge detailed discourses or teeny tiny blurbs. It’s all about the choice of the users here.

Can’t wait to see what you’ve got.

I Can't Play Video Games When I'm Sick

by Goldanas on Jan.28, 2009, under Consoles, News, Rant, xbox 360

vomit

It’s the most bizarre thing. Monday, I was horribly ill and couldn’t stop spilling my guts into the toilet, and, no matter how hard I tried, I couldn’t bring myself to play anything. It’s the worst feeling! Here I am with all the time in the world, and I can’t use it finish up those Speed Runs in Mirror’s Edge, complete that damn LittleBigPlanet level, finish up those Kombo Challenges in Mortal Kombat Vs. DC Universe, dick around in Metal Gear Online, or even just play some dudes in Super Smash Bros. Melee (that’s all we have up here at school).

So many choices, all of which I’m dying to make, I just can’t get myself to do it. It feels like a wall is up in front of me, like some sort of physical or metaphysical barrier is telling my body that I wouldn’t be able to handle the stimulation resulting from video games. No! That can’t be! I can always handle video games. I’m a man. It’s gotta’ be some psychological thing, like I’m worried about getting the controllers all nasty. I don’t know.

The worst part of all this is that I’m not going to have that kind of time to play again for another couple of days, so it’s really grinding into me. Oh well, at least I got to see some cool movies.

memento

This shit is balla'

I’m actually still a bit ill. I’m getting a bit exhausted just writing this. What a little baby I am.

Are you guys and girls better than me? Can you work up the nerve to play the vidya?

"Easy to Pick Up, Tough to Master." The Degeneration of Fun.

by Goldanas on Jan.27, 2009, under Consoles, Developers, News, Opinions, Rant

easymode233For those of you that played it, what did you dislike most about Twilight Princess? Was it the bloom and brown that’s run the gamut of every title last year? Was it the completely useless items that muddled the reason as to why anyone would even call it a Legend of Zelda game? Was it the mind-numbing linearity and lack of side-quests outside of collect-a-thons? Or, perhaps, was it the lack of difficulty?

Well, chances are it was all of those things combined, but the whole easy-mode thing probably stuck out the most. There’s a mass of games falling prey to this idea, theory, and concept that games need to be far more accessible to help penetrate the market more. Developers around the world are doing research groups in order to meet the demands of people who will never play their games anyway.

Is It Really That Hard to Find Someone Who Doesn't Sound Like Ass?

by Goldanas on Jan.25, 2009, under Consoles, Rant

Before continuing, please watch this. I know it’s hard, but bear with me.

WHAT THE FUCK IS UP WITH AKUMA?

Honestly, that’s just ridiculous. Who approved that? He sounds like an amorous gorilla.

I am not the be all end all of voice acting by any means, but if I had a whole studio and loads of money, I could guarantee that I wouldn’t be so daft as to hire someone who obviously didn’t fit the part. Of course, Akuma, is really just the first on the roster that is completely ruined forever. Thank some ethereal heavenly body that we can switch vocal options based on individual characters.

So, in the regard, I’m going to quickly run down a list of the characters and dictate which language they should be set to. This, I believe, will benefit all mankind.

First Footage of King of Fighters XII Location Test

by Goldanas on Jan.25, 2009, under Arcade

goro-a1There’s a lot of heat passin’ around right now about the new Street Fighter IV that will be hitting home very soon. It’s received a lot of praise about the new graphical approach its taken, and in that respect its well-deserved. They’ve done 3D exceptionally. The primary factor that drives it above the competition is that it doesn’t try to be photo-realistic or gray and brown but instead achieves a wonderfully stylized vision that suits the series’s roots.

However, this post is actually about a franchise that is also being revamped. Granted, it’s a lesser-known series, but it still has a strong following. The King of Fighters has always held a place in my heart, at least. Whether it’s the ever-changing game mechanics that are fresh in each and every iteration, the sheer amount of characters that is ever-growing still, or even the sprites and animation that each have so much care, detail, and attention attributed to every single one, this fighting series has remained a strong underdog in this shrinking market.

With the latest chapter, SNK Playmore has taken it upon themselves to finally update the graphics from the more-than-a-decade old set they’ve been using for the last 11 or so games, in addition to other titles of theirs not a part of this particular series. Rather than going into the details of the full HD rendered sprites and the soft shadow and lighting effects, here is a fat truckload (go to page 2) of videos from the first location test for the game. I feel these three are the best.
