A Better Idea
by Alex on Mar.07, 2009, under Site Stuff
Ok, so I just got done watching all of Gurren Lagann and I’m all optimistic and motivated. I’ll amend my previous statement: Instead of being on hold for now, we’ll just update whenever we have articles. Site keeps moving, traffic keeps trickling in, etc.
The XBox contest will remain on hold for now. I have a record of all of the points so far (since I’ve already published every single article that was written since the contest started and was paused), and when the contest resumes, I’ll just figure out how many days to run it and throw in the previous entries.
Alright, I think that's it
by Alex on Mar.05, 2009, under Site Stuff
Sorry guys, I think this site needs a major overhaul to get things moving again, and that’s just something I can’t provide right now. We’ve seriously only received one new article in the last three days, and I just can’t seem to find any way to keep them coming in. I guess the only way to get things moving again is to get some money going.
This site is now on hold until further notice. The same applies to the XBox contest. Feel free to send me questions or post your thoughts in the forum.
March Contest – Win an XBox 360 Pro
by Alex on Feb.28, 2009, under Site Stuff
CONTEST CURRENTLY ON HOLD. WILL RESUME IF WE EVER GET SOME ARTICLES GOING AGAIN.
It’s become clear to me that this site needs a serious kick in the ribs to get it going again. We’re pretty much we are out of articles, so drastic action is needed to keep this place from going belly up. So, to cut right to the point, I’ve decided to have another contest. Nothing lame this time though, I’m giving away one of these:
Yep, a brand new XBox 360 Pro. Don’t look at me like that, I know I haven’t gone out and bought it yet (you’ll get a real picture when I do). I want to make sure that people actually participate this time before buying the prize. Also, I’m afraid this contest will be limited to participants in the US and Canada only (sorry guys, it’s expensive to ship overseas).
If you already own a 360 and you end up winning the contest, you can choose to receive a Wii instead (if I can actually find one, that is). I honestly don’t know why anybody would want one though (that’s coming from someone who owns one).
So, how do you go about winning? Here are the rules:
- Contest will run all throughout the month of March.
- Winner will be determined by a raffle ticket system.
- Create a new topic on a forum plugging this contest, get one ticket (please leave a comment on this post with a link to the post). Limit one ticket per forum.
- Create a 100+ word blog post linking to this contest, get one ticket (please leave a comment on this post with a link to the post). Limit one ticket per blog.
- Get an article published in March, get five tickets per article (that’s published, not submitted).
- I will contact the winner sometime in early April. You have 5 days to answer me, or I will pick a new winner. Once I’ve gotten things squared away with the winner, I will send them the prize.
So yeah, get the word out about the contest and write me some articles. You may end up with a new console.
Bonkathon – It's Fundraiser/Charity Time
by Alex on Feb.19, 2009, under Bonkathon, Site Stuff
Attention all ye peoples.
With the Scout update right around the corner, I think it’s time to formally announce my plans for what I’ve been working on for about a month now:
Bonkathon
The rules are simple: For three hours, I will personally bonk for charity. I’m going to pick my favorite Team Fortress 2 2Fort server, play as Scout, and only use the bat. For three hours I will bonk, boink, and possibly cap the intel. I’m also going to stream it live.
After three hours, I’m going to add up all of my points, and that will determine how much money this little idea raises. Here’s how it’s going to work: Whoever wants to contribute will donate a certain amount per point. They’re free to set the rate, so if you only want to donate $0.01 per point, that’s fine. I’ll have a page setup where you can set the amount you want to donate, sign up to receive a ‘bill’ when the event is over, and keep track of the total cumulative amount donated per point. For this one (and I’m hoping to do more in the future), I’m setting a goal of a total of $2 per point and 300 points (I’m pretty good at bonking). 70% of the total amount donated will go to Child’s Play, and the rest goes towards paying you guys.
I’m going to try to drum up some interest with the various clans that I play with, and if you guys want to help spread the word, that’d be awesome. For those of you who are math-impaired, we can reach our goal if:
- 40 people donate $0.05 per point (that comes to $15 per person)
- 20 people donate $0.10 per point ($30 per person)
- 200 people donate $0.01 per point ($3 per person)
I’d say that sounds pretty doable. Exact date and dedicated page coming soon, I’m still working on getting the donation process automated. For now, let’s say this’ll happen on Friday, March 27th at 7 PM EST.
Recruitment and Awareness – I Need your Help
by Alex on Feb.16, 2009, under Site Stuff, Uncategorized
Things are getting pretty stale around here, and I hate to admit it but daily traffic has kinda leveled out. In short, we’re not really growing anymore. I need some help.
Specifically, I need some help from you guys. Here’s my idea: If any of you have accounts on any big gaming forums, it would be incredibly awesome of you to make a post about this site on Wednesday of this week. I know it’s shameless for me to ask, but I really think it’ll give us the boost we need. Yes, even from these guys:

Since payments are still on hold, it obviously won’t work too well to promote the site based solely on getting people to write. Therefore, if you decide to do this, I’d like you to just pick your favorite article, post it, and ask what others think about it. That, or just post a link to the main site and say something along the lines of “lol, a community-driven blog. This will never work.” Something like that.
Anyway, if anybody decides to do this, I’ll be eternally grateful.
Oops

I knew this day would come sooner or later. That day has finally arrived – I forgot to schedule articles. I have only myself to blame. Perhaps it was the 10 episodes of ‘Outlaw Star’ I watched last night, perhaps it was because I played through all of Left 4 Dead, or perhaps it was the fact that my roommate discovered you can dissolve skittles in Vodka. Whatever the reason, I have failed you GEB, and it won’t happen again.
Keep on writing. We’ll pick up again tomorrow.
Diaries of a Game Development Student (1st Entry)
by Spider-X on Feb.06, 2009, under Opinions, Rant, Site Stuff

Greetings fellow crab-people. This month marks my second month at Full Sail University, one of the top schools in video game design and development. It has been my dream since the days of the Super Nintendo to create video games. Of course, back then I assumed we’d still be playing the Super Nintendo to this day. While the technology has changed, my dreams and ambitions have not. (continue reading…)
GOOD NEWS EVERYONE
by Alex on Feb.04, 2009, under Site Stuff
Ok, not really.
As I mentioned in the podcast, this site is experiencing some difficulties, mainly of the financial kind. Changing domain names set us back at least two months in terms of getting advertiser dollars, and unfortunately due to a number of reasons, my other online ventures aren’t doing so hot either.
I’ve dumped more than a grand into this site and that money has gone straight to you guys. I appreciate all of the effort you’ve put in and all of the great content you’ve developed, but I just can’t keep this up anymore. Until this site starts to generate income, I have two choices:
- Put payments on hold
- Sell the site to someone else
It’s an unpleasant decision, and I’d like your input. Personally, I enjoy running this site, reading the articles, and participating in the podcasts. Realistically though, I need to pay my bills and eat occasionally, so as I said earlier, I can’t keep this going out of pocket.
If you guys want to keep the dollars flowing, I’ll try to find a buyer for the site. If, on the other hand, you just want to keep writing for the hell of it for a bit (in hopes of future monies), I’d be embarassed but willing to keep paying the server bills. If it comes down to #2, and you don’t personally agree, go ahead and delete any articles and drafts you have pending, and let me know if you’re owed anything. I’m not trying to cheat anybody out of their hard work.
Your comments, I wants them.

What You Can Do for the GEB Podcast!
by Goldanas on Jan.29, 2009, under Site Stuff
Hello womens and bros, we’re just about ready to have another podcast hosted by myself, Goldanas. It’s called MASSIVE DAMAGE or Crabcast or something to that extent, just so long as it doesn’t have anything to do with blags. So that makes this the first GEB podcast, but it’s really the second, and oh, man, never mind. I’m here to tell you what you can contribute!
First off:
You can be in it!

Head here to find out how.
If you’re not feeling that, or even if you are, you can also throw out a question or discussion topic that we’ll then open up during the podcast. That’s right! User response and feedback!
It can be about anything. If you want to throw out a discussion on market trends and current economic downturns, right on! If you want to find out what we think would fix the Sonic series, ask away! If you want to know Alex’s playing habits on TF2, divulge! If you want to find out why I’m such a big homosexual for writing that Tingle fiction, go ahead, cowboy!

You can throw out whatever you want and we’ll respond to it providing it’s not too personal, but that’ll depend on the user.
To have your question or topic read during the podcast, post it in the comments under this post using your username. The list of who’s going to be in it is as-of-yet undetermined, but you can count on Alex, mulmeltia, and myself. Don’t let that discourage you from asking about other users and their series or articles, though. Ask away.
Feel free to post huge detailed discourses or teeny tiny blurbs. It’s all about the choice of the users here.

Can’t wait to see what you’ve got.
