Serious fucking Business

“HEY GUYS, YOU ALL SUCK AND I’M NUMBER ONE BITCHES” is something one will often hear while playing Halo 3. For instance, my friend and I were playing capture the flag, we’re losing because we’re up against 4 generals in a party and some random guy. So this person on our team had a real trouble keeping his temper in check, and was quick to burst out in “OH MY GOD GUYS, JESUS YOU ALL SUCK, HOW CAN PEOPLE BE SO NEW TO THIS GAME?!”. Let me say that I’m by no means an easily angered person, so I waited until the game ended, then my friend and I commenced the impersonations. I’d like to also say, this fine gentleman we were playing with was the worst on our team, so irony was there too.
Video games are a source of entertainment, not a job, and definitely not serious business. Despite what gaming enthusiasts what you to think, gaming exists for the sole reason of entertainment, and why people take games so seriously is beyond me, unless you enjoy popping a nerve vessel every time something doesn’t go your way. You’d think that it’d be only younger people doing this, sadly that isn’t true. I’ve also noticed when people act like this they tend to do worse within a game, sometimes a few points down, sometimes to the where they’re killing their own team, and I wish I was joking.
Along the topic of serious business comes what is called “Competitive Gaming”. The popular ones are ICUP for StarCraft, CAL for Counter-Strike, and MLG for Halo, and honestly I don’t know who’s the worst group. ICUP folks are pretty decent (at least the ones I’ve met), but the CAL, and the MLG? Jesus Christ. These people have some kind of complex that makes them think that because they’re just involved in the league that they’re the best thing since sliced bread. One thing I noticed is that people who are entry level on these leagues are complete idiots, the people who are higher up have sportsmanship, and sportsmanship goes a long way towards bettering yourself and bettering others.
Sportsmanship ladies and gentlemen is what we don’t see anymore in the FPS genre. Why? I haven’t the faintest clue. Perhaps because FPS players are generally younger kids? The point of video games is fun and if by being super serious, you’re ruining someone else’s fun, then you’re a tool and shouldn’t be playing online.

It’s actually ICCUP, but yeah, anyone who actually thinks video games are a “sport” should probably kill themselves. Fatal1ty talked about all the physical and game training he does to become the best. Unfortunately, he neglected to recall that most of the other players in these “leagues” are fat neckbeards. A game is a unit of a sport, and sports can get you physically injured. Games are just, as you said, to be enjoyed.

you mad? if chess can be a sport, Halo 3 can be a sport too.
March 2nd, 2009 on 8:11 pm
Nah not mad, and to be honest I have no problem with Halo 3 being a “sport”, but there’s something to be said about the people who play in the leagues and take the games way to seriously.

[...] part of this fanbase is the “manly” kids who either play the game way to seriously, or believe there is no other weapon except for the power weapons and the assualt rifle and those [...]

Chess isn’t a sport, it’s a game. Chess boxing on the other hand is a kick ass sport.
March 4th, 2009 on 8:07 pm
chess is a sport bro. look it up.

If there was ever a board game that COULD be a sport, i suppose it would have to be chess. The sheer amount of mental fatigue and strategy involved can probably and has probably driven people to madness. Seeing as the only real difference between a game and a sport is the proclivity of oneself to be injured, chess could possibly fit itself into what I consider a sport.
March 4th, 2009 on 9:44 pm
Why must you you define a sport by physical activity or by they ability to injure oneself? A sport should be defined by the ability of competiveness, sportsmanship, and good fun. Isnt that what all sports have? I do believe that games can be sports and be used for entertainment. If you are good at something, why not try to get paid for it?
March 4th, 2009 on 10:25 pm
people have been injured and even killed playing chess. I am not even joking.
March 4th, 2009 on 10:58 pm
because you can define a game by how competitive one is, how sportsmanlike they are and how much fun you have. As i’ve said, the two key differences are how much physical injury you can incur on yourself, and the fact that games are units of sports. As steve said though, chess is serious fucking business. Might as well be a sport
March 4th, 2009 on 11:14 pm
why do you need physical injury for it to be a sport? It does not make any sense! Sports so not revolve around injuries they just sometimes happen. Also games can cause injuries too. Ever heard about Carpal Tunnel? That stuff hurts. Is that good enough for your injury bs?
March 5th, 2009 on 1:26 am
No it isnt. The only way to really differentiate a game from a sport is through physical pain. Yes carpal tunnel is painful, but is it as painful as getting your throat slashed by an ice skate? Is the hunched back you get from hunkering over a checkersboard more serious than having your arm bend in half after you bail on your skateboard? No, no it isnt. To put it simply, a sport can kill you, a game cant. That isn’t to say that people have died outside of a game (after all, if you fleece someone on the tables they might be liable to break your legs) but the truest way to make the distinction between the two is through the ability to incur pain during participation in the sport. Seeing as you are seemingly incapable of comprehending such a simple difference, I will terminate this discussion.
March 5th, 2009 on 1:55 am
thats just your opinion, man. the IOC considers chess to be a sport.
March 5th, 2009 on 2:13 am
ok first off getting your throat slashed by an ice skate rarely happens in hockey. the pros are not that dumb to do that. second i think a hunch back is worse. a broken arm you can work around it and keep life the same but a hunched back can really hurt your life style and it possible that it could not heall all the way, you might have back problems forever.
Now i do accept that it is a difference but like I said how can you classify what is a sport by injuries? cant anything that is competitive be a sport? just look at golf and bowling, those rarely or never have injuries and they are considered sports.
March 5th, 2009 on 2:40 am
LOL HEY GUYS I SPRAINED MY WRIST IN GOLF AND TRIPPED ON MY SHOELACE IN TENNIS LOL SPORTS ARE SO FUN I HURT MYSELF AND DOESN’T AFRAID OF ANYTHING.
