Somewhere back in the past: Alundra 2

by Bob Tampinha on Feb.22, 2009, under Consoles, Old but Awesome, Review

Alundra 2 is a great action/adventure game with some RPG elements. Alundra 2 can and will disappoint fans of the first game because it doesn’t follow the first game. It’s just another sequel that uses the name of a famous franchise to sell more.

Story:
The story tells us about a boy named Flint, who’s a pirate hunter and displays extraordinary swordsmanship. Princess Alexya asks Flint to save her father from Baron Diaz, who kidnapped and substituted the king with a wooden doll.

Graphics:
Typical PS1 graphics, lots of colorful 3D stuff, but it could be better. The characters aren’t all that detailed, but they fit the style of the game. Environments are filled with vibrant colours, although the textures are pretty plain. The particle effects are really surprising, and the BOOM! after every boss death is EPIC. It’s what we’d expect from PS1.

Sound:
A lot of the music fits well with the dungeons or towns, but it is repeated too much. The music has a nice catchy beat and totally gives off the feel of the game. The voice acting can be annoying sometimes, it isn’t bad, but it isn’t good either. The best part is the sound effects, the sound of Flint’s sword hitting flesh, the character’s grunts, the footsteps, their quality is great and they sound loud and clear.

Gameplay:
It’s your basic hack ‘n’ slash game (it’s very similar to Legend of Zelda), you can attack, jump, dodge, etc.You will be able to learn new combos and sword techniques by collecting puzzle pieces scattered around the world.

There are lots of puzzles, some of them testing your brain while others will test your agility. Some of them can get a bit frustrating. There are tons of mini games that are either well-hidden or extremely obvious

Fun:
Best part of the game. You travel to a lot of different places, exploring dungeons filled with creative puzzles. The dungeons aren’t hard, but the final dungeon is one of the hugest dungeons ever! It took me 4-5 hours to beat it, and the hardest puzzles of the game are there too!

Replay:
Well, there are a lot of side quests, so if you want to beat the game with 100%, you’re gonna need some time(25 hours to be exact). The mini games increase the replay factor, from Go-kart to Pac-man, this game has a lot of diversity. so there’s a lot to do if you wanna replay this game.

Conclusion:
Alundra 2 suffers most from the fact that there is no real reason for it to exist. If it was called by another name, Flint’s Adventures for example, it would be a lot better, because it would not disappoint the fans of the first Alundra game. Alundra 2 doesn’t have anything, ANYTHING in common with the first one.

Fans of this game probably never had the chance of playing the first one, because I’ve never met one fan of the first one who liked the second.

It’s a great game, with good replay,  you should try it.

I borrowed this game from a friend of mine back in the Playstation days. It was awesome. I really wish I would’ve been able to finish it.
