Microsoft to Cut up to 5,000 Jobs.

by NovaSyx on Jan.26, 2009, under Developers, News

microsoft_0That’s right folks, Sony aren’t the only ones to cut jobs. Thankfully Nintendo are still comfortable printing money from their bengal tiger-furred computer chairs drinking the blood of valkyries out of solid gold tankards.

Microsoft Corp. said it will cut 5,000 jobs, marking the software giant’s first-ever significant round of layoffs, as the company reported an 11% drop in fiscal second-quarter earnings and pulled its forecasts for the year.

News of the layoffs and results, which Microsoft released hours earlier than expected, sent shares of the Redmond, Wash., company near 11-year lows and rattled the technology stock sector. Microsoft shares traded down $1.67, or 8.6%, to $17.71 in midday trading on the Nasdaq Stock Market.

Microsoft is “on the defensive here and that is not what people want to see from a bellwether,”

And from the looks of that, Microsoft aren’t doing it by attrition (read: the nice way). Perhaps now when I call in about an RROD or E73 issue they’re not going to ask me ‘Have you tried turning it on and off‘ six more times.

Correction: Gamerscore Blog staff WAS laid off

Horrible news, here. Remember the update about Microsoft’s Gamerscore Blog being retired? As it turned out then, the staffers didn’t look like they were getting laid off of anything, but simply shuffled or absorbed into other parts of the company.

Well, as it turns out NOW that the staffers weren’t being shuffled or absorbed at all – rather, it was all a preface for them getting the boot. The retrenchment of the Gamerscore Blog staff, it seems, is but a part of Microsoft’s 1,400-employee layoff plans.

This disturbing update comes directly from former Gamerscore head honcho Chris Paladino’s Twitter account.

Chin up, guys. You had a good run.

SEGA of America now laying off people?

by mulmeltia on Jan.22, 2009, under Developers, News, Opinions

More rumor-mongering coming from IGN, and this time the word on the vine concerns that of SEGA of America. It seems that the current economic crunch is affecting even the American branch of SEGA, with the company rumored to have laid off at least 30 employees to cut costs. What particular department in SOA that’s getting their resources slashed is something we don’t know yet, what with the company keeping mum on this issue – but yeah. They might be laying off people as we speak.

IGN cites an unnamed source inside SEGA itself.

Rumors are rumors, and sometimes they’re nothing but. However, we wouldn’t really be surprised if this particular bit of news turns out to be true, what with Free Radical going under, Sony and Microsoft doing the same workforce-demoralizing tactics and so on. We just hope that the crew making up SONIC Team (bless their hearts) gets their offices locked down and all their shit boxed up nice and tight in the company parking lot.
